    Macalester College seeks to hire a temporary, part-time Assistant Track & Field Coach to work in its Athletics department. The assistant coach will assist the head coach in all aspects of a NCAA Division III program as needed. This position supports the activities to assist the Men’s & Women’s Track and Field program specifically in the area of jumps (long, triple, and high) and in the multi-events (heptathlon, pentathlon and decathlon). This position requires some travel and evening/weekend hours.

    Responsibilities

    • Organizes, prepares, and conducts safe and strategic individual and team training sessions and competitive strategies for event specific athletes. Executes appropriate coaching decisions during practice and competition that ensure the welfare of the student athletes representing their program.
    • Assists the head coach in developing and incorporating a comprehensive recruiting plan that shows successful results for the recruitment, yield and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes in a rigorous academic environment. Serves as an effective recruiter for the program working within the parameters of Macalester, MIAC and NCAA rules.  Recruitment strategy results in healthy roster numbers and a competitive program against scheduled opponents.
    • Assists the head coach in facility set up and break down for home meets and practices. Assists the head coach in all aspects of managing a home meet (securing and communicating with meet officials).
    • Fosters and facilitates an environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.
    • Works with a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity in higher education.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • Valid driver’s license required.
    • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
    • Previous assistant coaching experience with Track & Field events of jumps and or sprints in a high school or higher education setting preferred.
    • Knowledgeable in practice and training modes, competitive strategies and effective, sustained, and results oriented recruiting program. Creates a positive, organized and enriching experience for the student athletes involved in the program.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of working with diverse colleagues, students and community members.
    • Excellent customer service, communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a diverse and independent group of clients, including students, faculty and staff, with a commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity.
