Overview

Macalester College is a highly selective residential liberal arts college in a vibrant urban setting in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The Department of Spanish & Portuguese at Macalester College sponsors Casa Hispana, a residence next to campus for students who are interested in living in a Spanish-speaking environment. Residence is intended for those who have achieved at least an intermediate level of proficiency in Spanish and want to maintain and improve their skills. Residents commit to speaking only Spanish while in the house.

 

Macalester College seeks a mature, energetic, and student-centered Language Lab Assistant/Native Speaker to work in collaboration with The Department of Spanish & Portuguese as a Spanish language laboratory assistant and to manage the daily operations of the Casa Hispana.

 

This position reports to the Casa Hispana Liaison and the Chair of the Department of Spanish & Portuguese for the labs and curricular duties. Native Speakers also work closely with Residential Life and follow the employment expectations for managing language house residences. 

Responsibilities

The language lab instructor provides Macalester students with supplemental classroom language instruction. There are two Spanish Lab Instructors who teach laboratories under supervision at both beginning and intermediate language levels in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. The teaching load for each instructor is normally ten laboratory sections per semester.

 

The two Spanish Lab Instructors/Native Speakers live in the Spanish House/Casa Hispana next to campus and provide students with a resource for cultural study, conversation practice and research. The Spanish Lab Instructors/Native Speakers also supervise the living arrangements at the house, facilitate programming activities for the residents, and assist with the Spanish program in general.

 

  • Lab Instructors are responsible for providing Macalester students with supplemental classroom language instruction
  • Inform students of attendance and participation guidelines for the lab sessions
  • Observe and follow the department’s curricular goals and student learning outcomes
  • Meet once each week with Practicum Coordinator to plan practicum curriculum
  • Help Practicum Coordinator develop materials and activities appropriate for each level
  • Provide cultural information to the students in a communicative and informal enviroment.
  • Hold regular office hours (1-2 weekly) for consultation in lab assistant office (HUM303A)
  • These office hours will be regular and not “by appointment only”
  • Maintain an online bank of materials for all language levels (elementary and intermediate)
  • Keep a precise record of attendance and participation for each student and provide progress reports to professors twice each semester (midterm week and at the end of the (semester)
  • Reside in the Casa Hispana (A private single room is provided for each Lab Instructor)
  • Foster an environment that immerses students in a Spanish-speaking setting and culture
  • Demonstrate consistent, supportive and enthusiastic presence in the Casa Hispana
  • Encourage enthusiastic commitment to community development among Casa residents, departmental majors and minors, as well as departmental and college faculty and staff
  • Engage with and support students on a daily basis to promote a safe place to live
  • Present a provisional schedule for cultural activities to the Spanish faculty at the second department meeting of the semester, which can be updated as necessary throughout the year. Activities might include film series, dinners, dance lessons, literary readings, etc.
  • These activities may be coordinated with Spanish and Portuguese professors to complement class requirements
  • Manage Casa Hispana budget in coordination with faculty liaison and department coordinator
  • Oversee the Casa Hispana resident selection process, which includes publicizing the house and recruiting eligible students. Residential Life requires that this process be completed for the entire upcoming academic year by the sixth week of spring semester.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or equivalent degree required
  • Language instruction, humanities or linguistics-related field preferred 
  • Native level proficiency in the house language (verbal and written)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Background in languages and culture
  • Proficient in English verbal and writing skills
  • Prior experience teaching at the college level preferred

Attendance on the job is essential. Both Native Speakers/Lab Assistants are expected to be present in the Spanish House during the entire duration of fall and spring semesters while students are living in the house. According to Macalester Employment Services and the formal contract, the Native Speakers/Lab Assistants contract extends from August 28,2020 to May 15,2020. Native Speakers/Lab Assistants are expected to be on campus and living in the house between those dates, with the exception of fall break, Thanksgiving break, winter break and spring break, as indicated in Macalester’s academic calendar.
