Overview

The Assistant Dean for Academic Programs and Advising supports student success as part of the student care team, through academic orientation of first-year and transfer students, and by collaborating with the Associate Dean for Advising on advisor training, first-year seminar instructor training, and the first-year experience. 


About The Department:

The Academic Programs and Advising Office works closely with faculty and staff to carry out the academic mission of the college. We support faculty advisors, support Macalester’s First-Year Course Program, manage the Academic Standing process, work with students in academic difficulty, facilitate Macalester’s departmentally-based Honors Program, and oversee funds for student academic travel, prizes and awards, and honors.

Responsibilities

  • Student Support:
    • Meet individually with students and serve as liaison between faculty and students
    • Serve on the care team
    • Convene the academic standing committee and meet with students on probation; reach out to students after midterm grades
    • Communicate and implement academic policies such as academic integrity, grade appeals, late withdrawal requests, study away appeals, and incompletes.
  • First-Year, Transfer, and Exchange Student Onboarding: 
    • Provide academic affairs components for orientation and first year course program
    • Oversee the placement of incoming students in classes
    • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Advising on training for FYC instructors and preceptors
    • Academic onboarding, advising, and class selection for transfer and exchange students
    • Support students on placement and meeting the Language Requirement.
  • Advising and Advisor Training: 
    • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Advising on advising training for faculty and staff
    • Manage the assignment and distribution of faculty advising loads and advisor changes
  • Student Prizes and Awards and Departmental Honors: 
    • Oversee honors program and budget
    • Oversee academic prizes and awards
    • Manage and award funds for student academic travel
  • Committee Assignments:
    • Educational Policy and Governance Committee
    • New Student Portal Committee
    • Exchange Student review team
  • Academic affairs administration:
    • Respond to inquiries from current students, parents, and prospective students
    • Oversee academic policies in the student handbook
    • Oversee preceptorships
    • Support December and May graduations including production of programs
    • Communicate with the Registrar’s Office on academic policy questions and appeals.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or Related Field required 
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with individuals of color, first-generation college students and/or individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Commitment to the public good and student development
  • 3-5 years of experience in higher education, specifically experience with advising, teaching, and/or managing an academic or honors program
  • Knowledge of or training in the scholarship and practice of advising in higher education
  • Experience managing programs
  • Fluency in Google Business Suite.

 

Compensation:

The annual salary range for this position is $70,000-$78,000, depending on experience.
