Overview

The Chinese Language Lab Instructor provides Macalester students with oral/aural language instruction. Responsibilities include teaching lab sessions, grading, holding office hours, organizing and participating in department-wide events, meeting with students and language faculty, and performing other duties as assigned by the department chair.  

 

This is a 0.56 FTE, exempt, 12 month position with the most active work taking place during the 9 month academic year. The expected weekly hours during the 9 month school year is 26 hours. 

 

About The Department: 

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC) serves as a home for the study of Asia, both for broad comparative and cultural studies of the history, literature, film, art, music, and society in Asia, and for the more focused study of Japanese or Chinese language and culture.

 

The Department’s Objectives Are: 

  • To promote the study of Asian Languages and Cultures as an integral part of a liberal arts education. 
  • To offer a wide range of language courses in Chinese and Japanese for majors, minors, and other students. 
  • To provide students with a firm foundation in fields such as literature, film, linguistics, and translation studies. 
  • To prepare students for graduate work and professional careers related to Asia. 
  • To support the college’s mission of internationalism, multiculturalism, and civic engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Design, prepare, and teach lab classes that integrate with and support the curriculum taught in the Monday/Wednesday/Friday language classes.
  • Hold office hours and meetings (with faculty and students).
  • Participate in extracurricular department activities. Promote campus-wide cultural awareness of the culture/s associated with the language being taught. Enrich the cultural competency and linguistic immersion of the residents of the language house.
  • Other duties as assigned by the department chair.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 1 year of language instruction experience is desirable.
  • Advanced knowledge or native level proficiency in a non-English language (including verbal and written language skills).
  • Interpersonal skills - must be able to professionally interact with students, faculty, staff, and visitors from diverse backgrounds.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Degree in Language Instruction or Linguistics Related desired. 

 

Compensation:

The salary is $23,000 paid over 12 months and is part-time benefits eligible.  Also, able to enroll in one class per semester on a space available basis.
