Overview

The College Chaplain and Associate Dean for Institutional Equity stands at the intersection of community, learning, spiritual discernment, and equity. 

 

As the College Chaplain, this position plans and directs Macalester College’s interfaith religious and spiritual life program including educational, pastoral, and community care, as well as social justice education with a faith-based lens.

 

As the Associate Dean for Institutional Equity, this position serves on the Institutional Equity leadership team to guide Macalester’s ongoing work toward equity and social justice through collective action, shared visioning, and community connection.

 

Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Equity, the College Chaplain and Associate Dean for Institutional Equity has responsibilities for facilitating a respectful and supportive campus culture, building efforts that connect community members to institutional mission and values, and engaging in reflective practices with an equity lens. The College Chaplain and Associate Dean for Institutional Equity works in close partnership with students, faculty, staff, and alumni.  

 

This is a full-time exempt position with typical working business hours. There is flexibility to adjust hours based on required attendance at evening and weekend events.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the programmatic efforts of the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life and the operation and management of the Weyerhaeuser Memorial Chapel facility
  • Expands opportunities for students to engage their religious and spiritual expression through support of pluralistic ritual practices on campus and in the Twin Cities area
  • Amplifies educational opportunities and curriculum that promote religious literacy for engagement in a pluralistic world. 
  • Addresses the spiritual and pastoral needs of Macalester community and make appropriate referrals to on and off campus services 
  • Hires, trains, develops and manages the effectiveness of CRSL team members to meet college and department goals, including informal feedback on an ongoing basis and formal feedback in the annual performance review process to develop talent
  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives to foster a community-centered culture and climate with equity and inclusion lens
  • Convenes campus-wide Equity Connections Collective with faculty and staff who contribute to unit-level equity and inclusion programs to build cross-campus initiatives, build shared resources, and fosters effective collaboration 
  • Supports response to reported bias incidents, in collaboration with the Title IX Coordinator and Bias Incident Response Team, to facilitate restorative practices, accountability, and educational efforts
  • Partners with the Dean for Institutional Equity to facilitate and contribute to equity education resources and workshops
  • Actively partners with Advancement to support fundraising efforts and alumni engagement
  • Cultivates strategic and meaningful partnerships with academic departments, administrative departments, and student organizations to support equity initiatives and spiritual exploration on campus 
  • Serves on college-wide committees; may represent the division or the college at events with prepared remarks
  • Responds to emergent issues and concerns on campus 
  • Serves on the Institutional Equity Leadership Team and contribute to strategic visioning and division-wide support 
  • Completes other responsibilities as assigned as an active member of the team

Qualifications

  • Minimum Master’s degree and theological education
  • Minimum 8 years experience in higher education, including student affairs, religious life, equity initiatives, or related professional experience
  • One unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and ordination, credentialing or ecclesiastical endorsement 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of equity principles and intersectionality in a complex organization or higher education 
  • Religious and spiritual training and experience to engage in multifaith setting and ritual leadership within equity and social justice frameworks
  • Demonstrated experience to develop, implement, and assess program direction and engagement 
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a confidential resource for campus community 
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complex conversations and sensitive situations with respect, clarity, directness, and grace
  • Understanding of emerging adulthood and the role of religion and spirituality in meaning-making 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience communicating with diversity of students, faculty, and staff, and ability to act with diplomacy
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret, analyze, and apply evidence-based decision-making 
  • Experience with supervision, budget management, and facilities management
  • Excellent communication skills and knowledge of MS Office Suite, Google Suite Applications, Wordpress, and Budgeting applications
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize competing demands and projects 
  • Skilled in liaising with denominational and community partners, including the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) 



Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $94,000 to $98,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
