Overview

Macalester College is seeking our next Director of Counseling at the Hamre Center for Health & Well-Being.  This role will provide leadership, vision, and strategic planning for the work of the counseling services department in support of Macalester College students.  They will lead the operation of counseling services including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, outreach, consultation, and referrals.  They will lead a diverse and committed team of six other counseling staff.  

 

The successful candidate will embrace working in a highly collaborative, integrated care center and with our multidisciplinary leadership team.  They will demonstrate a commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity, actively engaging in learning and practicing principles of social justice.  They will also support a welcoming and inclusive environment across the Macalester community and within the Hamre Center.

 

This is a full-time, exempt position with a hybrid schedule of 4 days in office, and 1 day per week to work from home during the academic year (2 days per week to work from home during the summer).

 

About The Department: 

The Hamre Center for Health & Well-Being is an integrated center with medical, counseling, operations/administrative, and health promotion/sexual respect teams who value a public health approach.  Our team of directors is highly collaborative and operates in a distributed leadership model, in conjunction with our executive director.  We care deeply about meeting our students where they are developmentally and partnering with them in decision-making about their care.  Inclusion, access, and culturally responsive care are hallmarks of our Center; as such, we do not bill students for clinician time.  We also value supporting the personal sustainability of our staff.  We are active in developing the next generation of learners working in college health and regularly host counseling interns from a variety of disciplines, an adolescent health fellow, medical residents, and medical assistant students.

Responsibilities

  • Provides clinical and administrative supervision to counseling staff; hires, trains, develops and manages the effectiveness of team member(s) to meet college and department goals and ensure quality standards; plans and facilitates counseling staff meetings; develops protocols and procedures that adhere to and uphold state and federal laws and ethical standards as defined by the appropriate licensing boards.  Provides informal feedback on an ongoing basis and formal feedback in the annual performance review process to develop talent. Collaborates with HR on employee processes. Plans organizational structure, position descriptions, and staffing.
  • Provides leadership and direction for services addressing emotional well-being and mental health of Macalester students that emphasize community, collaboration, and social justice. Includes strategic planning, assessment, policy and program development and implementation.  Collaborates closely with other departments within the Hamre Center (operations, medical, health promotion/sexual respect) and utilizes a public health approach.
  • Serves as lead clinician and primary point of contact for issues related to student mental health concerns; is a member of the Scots Care (care management) team.  Along with members of the counseling leadership team, provides crisis consultation and consultation to faculty and staff for student mental health concerns. Maintains appropriate record-keeping.
  • Promotes Hamre’s commitment to a public health approach by providing policy recommendations, support, and training for the Macalester community (students, staff, faculty, and other key constituencies) on topics related to student mental health and well-being. Develops resources for office publication and training.
  • Provides direct clinical services to students (~10% of time during the academic year). 
  • Participates in activities and associations related to college health and the maintenance of professional skills, standards, competencies.  Contributes to the field of college mental health counseling through professional organizations, professional supervision, and research.
  • Completes other responsibilities as assigned. Participates in department, division, and college activities and supports implementation of shared goals and initiatives. 

Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal and coalition-building skills.  
  • The ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously. 
  • Cultural responsiveness and enthusiasm in work with a diverse community of students and staff. Commitment to integrated care and understanding of the public health approach for mental health.  Interest and experience in working in developmentally-appropriate ways with late adolescents/emerging adults.
  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a related mental health degree.
  • Must be licensed in the State of Minnesota (or eligible for immediate licensure) for practice in the stated mental health field.
  • Experience in college health is highly desired.

 

Compensation: 

The annual salary for this position is $94,072 - $98,348, depending on experience.
