Overview

Serves as the primary career advisor to STEM undergraduates on topics related to career development, including major/career exploration, job/internship search strategies, job offer evaluation/negotiation and graduate school applications.  Partners with faculty, staff and student orgs to develop and evaluate programs to serve these needs, including individual and group programming. Serves as a key connector between STEM students and faculty and the Career Exploration's Employer Relations team, providing insight into industry trends, student interest and connecting employers and alumni to STEM students.  Reports to the Director of Career Advising and Student Engagement, and will be housed in the Olin-Rice Science Center.  Works as part of the Career Exploration career advising team to provide exceptional career development support to the Macalester community.

 

About The Department: 

Career Exploration offers in person and virtual programs, services and appointments in our office in Kagin Commons and Olin-Rice, as well as across campus. Our advisors provide tailored career exploration and preparation for students of all majors – and for those exploring them all.

 

We are agnostic about the path students choose for life after Macalester. We help all students to explore a wide variety of options, design materials that translate their liberal arts experience, connect to those who may mentor them and launch them with confidence into the world.

Responsibilities

40% Career Advising and Counseling:

  • Serves as primary career advisor to STEM undergraduates on topics related to their career development, including major/career exploration, job/internship search strategies, job offer evaluation/negotiation and graduate school applications. 
  • Provides individualized and group resume, cover letter and personal statement reviews.
  • Writes and develops resources on career-related topics.
  • Conducts practice interviews with students, providing feedback to foster student development

 

35% Program Development and Evaluation:

  • Works closely with faculty to coordinate annual plan for Olin-Rice career programming and support.
  •  Develops and presents career related workshops and panels for STEM students.
  • Evaluates workshops and programs.
  • Works with faculty and alumni relations and development staff to coordinate STEM-related alumni events.
  • Develops and implements equitable and accessible support structure and programming.

 

15% Outreach:

  • Creates and maintains working relationships with designated academic departments by collaborating with department chairs, faculty and coordinators.
  • Oversees and implements career outreach through faculty partnerships and class presentations.  
  •  Coordinates with CE employer relations team to develop STEM-focused local MacExplore trips.
  • Serves as a liaison between the STEM faculty and students and the CE employer relations team, providing input on the identification and development of employment and external research opportunities.

 

5% Leadership and Supervision:

  • Trains and supervises Olin-Rice Hub student employees and undergraduate fellows
  • Assist in the development and implementation of CE’s annual strategic plan.

 

5% Other Responsibilities: 

  • Completes other responsibilities as assigned. Participates as an active member of the team. Participates in department and college activities and supports implementation of shared goals and initiatives. Provides backup support to other members of the team.

 

Qualifications

Required: 

  • Bachelors Degree
  • 1-3 years of experience in higher education, counseling, STEM, or in a related field.  Demonstrated ability to advise and counsel.  
  • Experience in program development and management.  
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills.  Experience or strong interest in working with STEM students in a liberal arts environment.

 

Preferred: 

  • Demonstrated ability to partner with a diverse set of stakeholders. 
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.  
  • Experience serving diverse audiences.  
  • Previous experience administering and interpreting career inventories.

 

Compensation:

The annual salary for this position will be between $55,651-$58,181 based on experience.
