Macalester College is unique among top-tier liberal arts colleges in two important ways. First, while all schools have a mission, here you will find a campus, alumni, and parent community united behind a mission of rigorous academics with a special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society. This mission drives everything at the college and has shaped what it is today:
- A faculty ranked among the best in the nation, with a commitment to faculty-student research
- A century of internationalism, currently with 15% of students from over 90 different countries
- 33% of domestic students are students of color
- More than 15% of students are the first generation in their family to attend college
- A historic commitment to economic diversity -- nearly 80% of students receive need-based financial aid
Second, our location amplifies our mission. Macalester is located in a vibrant metropolitan area known for being among the most literate, educated, and artistic areas in the country, with a strong economy featuring 18 Fortune 500 headquarters, some of the largest private companies and foundations in the country, a large not-for-profit community, and a commitment to education.
